Midwife Ann Rifenberg, service director of the UW Health midwifery program, wearing black, helps Alena, 1, and Alec, 3, listen to the fetal heart tones of their pregnant and soon to be expecting mother Emily Miller during a prenatal-visit at the UW Health West Clinic. Miller often brings along one or two of her three children so that they can experience the visits and be involved in the birthing process. This will Miller’s fourth child to be birthed with the aid of a midwife. Speaking of the program, Miller says, “When I was pregnant with my first child, I was much younger, single and scared. They [midwifes] were professional, personal and caring⦠they really listen to everything I say.”
